Most of us know that we are surrounded by RF radiation all of the time. This radiation is of the non-ionizing variety, meaning that it lacks the energy to damage the DNA of a cell and cause mutations. RF is routinely absorbed by the body and the effects of this absorption are called “thermal effects”, basically much as a microwave oven can heat water, RF radiation can rapidly warm the body. The eyes and the testes are most vulnerable to this due to the lack of blood flow to these areas that would normally allow dissipation of this energy. Other low level RF absorption effects, also called non-thermal effects, have been claimed to exist (Radio Frequency Sickness, Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity), but proof of their existence has not been able to be reproduced in experimental research.
Likewise, the long-standing concern over developing cancer from exposure to RF radiation has been debunked as RF radiation is non-ionizing radiation, meaning that it lacks the energy to remove electrons from atoms, particularly in DNA when it comes to cancer concerns, whereas stronger, higher frequency Electromagnetic Radiation (UV Rays and Gamma Rays) is definitely known to alter cells, creating tumors and causing malignancy.
In the United States, the FCC Guidelines for human exposure to RF Fields were derived from two expert organizations the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) and the NCRP (National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements) after extensive reviews of scientific literature related to RF biological effects. FCC also consulted with the EPA (Environmental Protective Administration), OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and obtained their support for the guidelines that they are using. Because humans absorb RF radiation most efficiently at around 70MHz, the 30MHz-300MHz band of these RF wavelengths are most strictly regulated.
In Europe and elsewhere, countries use the guidelines developed by the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non Ionizing Radiation Protection) which are generally similar to the guidelines of the IEEE and NCRP, but differ in some of the lower and higher frequency ranges for hand held cell phones. The ultimate goal is to set up an international standard, going forward, for RF Safety.
The IEEE, NCRP, and ICNIRP have identified the same threshold level at which harmful biologic effects may occur and the values for Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) recommended for electric and magnetic field strength in both documents are based on this value. The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) for the whole body is 4 watts per kilogram. Now that you have digested the “Alphabet Soup” of terms and groups associated with RF radiation, let’s get down to the “nuts and bolts of RF safety”.
Many people are worried about the proximity of their homes to Cellular Towers and the amount of energy that they are exposed to. RF emission, like all energy, the power density decreases rapidly as the distance from the transmitting antenna decreases, with a cellular antenna, it is possible that a person standing directly in front of the antenna could reach close to or exceeding the recommended doses, while on the ground, where most of us spend our time, the exposure level is often 1,000 times lower than the safety level. As I’ve said many times before, the risk of health problems from RF radiation is very slight, with the exception of the person who works with it all of the time.
It is for this reason that many transmitting/broadcasting facilities have the area near to their transmitting antennas secured to prevent people and employees from being exposed to excessive levels of RF radiation at the sight of transmission. Other exposure concerns exist for Antenna Tower Maintenance personnel, 5G Workers, Microwave Workers, and anyone who works in a high density level of RF Field signals could be at risk to the thermal effects of RF.
