RF Shielded Enclosures-Testing at Home!

RF Shielded Enclosures-testing at Home!  Preparing for Final Compliance EMC Testing is difficult.  One of the best ways to prepare for this test is to prepare your product during development.  Testing your product in your home environment during development builds EMC into your device from the start and is the best way to proceed.  Pre-Compliance EMC Testing can be done easily at your development site.  It actually saves time in development, by intercepting EMC issues along the way rather than discovering the problems far into development process and having to “backtrack” to find and correct the issue.  Backtracking takes time, and time is money!

RF Shielded Enclosures-Testing at Home!  An RF Shielded Enclosure provides the low ambient RF conditions required for effective EMC testing.  Enclosures are constructed using conductive textiles, creating a Faraday Cage.  Faraday cages block  Electromagnetic Fields from entering the enclosure, providing a low RF noise floor.  In addition to the RF Shielded Enclosure, equipment requirements are:

  • Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer
  • Antennas, cables, and a Tripod
  • Preamplifier
  • Turntable
  • EMC Software

RF Shielded Enclosures-Testing at Home!  Pre-Compliance EMC Testing consists of tw0 tests.  Emission Testing examines RF emissions from your device and determines if these emissions are within the acceptable range for your product type.  If your product’s emissions exceed the standard, modifications are necessary to correct the level of emissions.   Susceptibility Testing determines if your product will perform optimally in a standard shared electromagnetic environment.  If your device is susceptible to RF emissions within the standard, modifications are necessary to correct this susceptibility.   Typically, shielding materials will either block the offending emissions by the emitting device or block the access of the standard RF environment to the Susceptible device, correcting the issues.
