Infrared Detection, the Good and the Bad, and How to Avoid it!

 What is Infrared Detection?

Infrared Detection is using heat as a method of finding someone or something.  The the infrared sensor/camera picks up the infrared heat signature of a person or object, which is be stronger or weaker than their surroundings.  This makes the human being or object “distinct” from its surroundings, essentially locating the human being or object.

What is Good about IR Detection?

One good thing about infrared detection is the use of this technology in finding people lost in the wilderness.  The infrared heat signature of the person is detected by the infrared sensor or camera and guides the rescuers to the missing person.

What is Bad about IR Detection?

One of the  bad things about infrared detection is that there are some times when people may not want to be found or seen in any fashion and are using the darkness as their cover while working.  I am talking about the military and police personnel involved in covert missions or stakeouts.  Like any human being, these servicemen will always have a “heat signature” as they are warm, living human beings.  It is necessary to hide that infrared heat signature if they want to continue to be living human beings.  Their lives depend upon stealth and secrecy of their locations.  Infrared detection can also be misused by nefarious people nosing around and interfering with the people’s basic right to privacy.

How can Infrared Detection be Avoided?

Hiding from infrared detection is accomplished by using Shieldex® Bremen-IR, a silver plated textile that is infrared diffusing.  Using this material, Infrared diffusing suits can readily be fashioned from this material, offering full body coverage.  Shieldex® Bremen-IR diffuses the infrared heat signature. This allows the individual wearing the suit to “blend in” to his surroundings.  This same Shieldex®Bremen-IR material is used to make covers for military vehicles and helicopters, hiding the heat signature from the engine of the vehicle beneath an infrared diffusing cover while it cools to ambient temperature.  If you would like to protect yourself and personal items from “infrared stalking”, you might wish to consider the Bremen IR.  Please contact us if you are interested in this material.
